"Gossip Girl" casting director David Rapaport revealed that the role of Dan Humphrey almost went to Alden Ehrenreich instead of Penn Badgley.

Penn Badgley Almost Didn’t Play Dan Humphrey on “Gossip Girl”

I can’t even imagine this.

Good morning, Upper East Siders! Gossip Girl here, and have we got a story for you.

As we all know, Dan Humphrey, AKA Lonely Boy, has gone down in Gossip Girl history as S’s true love, the only Brooklyn resident in the entire show, and the mastermind behind that mysterious entity called Gossip Girl. Penn Badgley played Dan for all six seasons of the show, taking Dan from a St. Jude’s student to a bestselling author and Vanity Fair contributor, but things could have been totally different; another actor was considered for the part, which would have changed Gossip Girl history forever.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, casting director David Rapaport revealed that he had another actor in mind to play Dan: Alden Ehrenreich, who went on to play Star Wars space swashbuckler Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story. “Before Penn was involved, I desperately wanted Alden Ehrenreich to play Dan,” Rapaport said. However, it all boiled down to the actor’s height; Alden was apparently too short to play against Blake Lively as Serena van der Woodsen, so the part went to Penn and Gossip Girl as we know it took shape.

Rapaport went back to Penn when looking for an actor to play Joe Goldberg in You, but he wasn’t sure Penn would take the role, given its similarities to Dan and Gossip Girl. “I didn’t think he would do it,” Rapaport explained to EW. “But once we got the idea in our heads, it all made sense. I can’t imagine anybody else playing that character.” Of course, we know Penn eventually took that role too and made Joe Goldberg one of the most compellingly creepy characters on TV.

There was one Gossip Girl character that Rapaport didn’t have to work to cast: Serena van der Woodsen. According to Rapaport, he didn’t have anyone else in mind to play S except Blake. “They were looking for someone who was casually cool, effortlessly chic, and—as a performer—was able to access their feelings,” he said. “I was looking for this perfect person that would deliver on every level.” And that someone was Blake. “I did not have another choice. I knew in my heart there was no one else.”

Both actors were perfect for their roles, and they brought the scandalous world of Manhattan’s elite to life for six dramatic, over-the-top seasons. S and Lonely Boy live happily ever after thanks to Netflix, where we can revisit the magic of Penn and Blake whenever we want.
